Being a homeschool educator is hard work. To say you wear many different hats is quite the understatement. You are a teacher, a listener, a counselor, a parent and a friend to your homeschool child each and every day. And on top of all those hats that you wear, you're also expected to teach and educate your child on all the items that they need to learn and understand to increase their knowledge and prepare them for the world. Whew! That's a lot of responsibility! If you have feelings of doubt when it comes to teaching certain subjects and topics, you aren't alone. You can't be expected to know everything, and when those topics arise that you are unfamiliar with, rest assured that there are plenty of resources out there to help you along the way!
How to Teach Homeschool Curriculum that You Aren't Strong In
- Educate yourself along with your children. Part of the joy of homeschooling is that you are also creating an environment for your family to be able to be together and learn as well. If there is a subject that you feel you aren't as strong in, why not learn right along with them? Instead of viewing it in a negative light that you aren't well-versed in a certain topic, use it as a learning experience where you can help educate yourself and your child together. It can be quite fun to learn and explore different topics together!
- Ask for help! Being a homeschooler doesn't mean that you are alone in this world! There are a ton of great resources out there to help structure and teach a variety of homeschool topics that can come in very useful during times that you need a little extra support. Online courses and homeschooling sites are great to ask questions and get some lesson plans quickly and easily. And if you are wanting to have more help locally, get in touch with the schools in your area or other homeschool parents to see if there is a way that you can all help one another. If you are having an issue needing some help on a certain topic, more than likely there are other homeschool parents out there that are feeling the same way! Don't feel as though you can't ask for help. Everyone needs help now and again!
- Purchase a self-taught lesson plan to get your child through the curriculum that you may not be strong in. If your teaching style for your child won't work for lesson plans that you aren't strong in, research online and purchase a course or lesson plan that actually does the teaching for you. There are so many options for online classes that your student can take that there should be no shortage of options for help. And before you spend big bucks to get the help that you need, check with the library in your area to see if they have any free resources that can teach your child in the area that you're lacking in. Career centers in your town may also be another great option to look at when it comes to finding someone to help fill in a few of those gaps!
Don't be hard on yourself when it comes to trying to find alternative ways to educate your child on various topics. As long as you are focusing on the main key point of getting your child the education and information needed to be able to successfully learn the curriculum at hand, then you are doing a great job at being a homeschool educator. There will always be things come up that you need help in, it's how you react and move forward that counts!
