Constitution Day, observed on September 17th, commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. As a kindergarten teacher, this give you a wonderful opportunity to introduce young learners to basic concepts of government, citizenship, and the importance of rules, as well as teach about important U.S. symbols. While the idea of the Constitution might seem advanced for five-year-olds, there are many creative ways to make the topic both accessible and engaging.

Here are some ideas and activities to help you celebrate Constitution Day in your kindergarten classroom.

Why Celebrate Constitution Day in Kindergarten?

At the kindergarten level, celebrating Constitution Day is an excellent chance to teach children about being part of a community and the values of respect, cooperation, and responsibility. These foundational concepts can be reinforced through fun and interactive activities that make learning enjoyable.

Create a Classroom Constitution

One way to introduce the concept of the Constitution is by creating a “Classroom Constitution.” This activity not only makes the idea of a constitution tangible but also helps establish a positive classroom culture from the beginning of the school year. You can start by asking students why they think rules are important and what happens when we don’t have rules. Then, help them brainstorm a list of rules that help make the classroom a happy, safe, and productive place for everyone. Write down the rules on a large sheet of paper and have each student sign their name (or place a handprint) at the bottom as a pledge to follow the rules. Be sure to display the Classroom Constitution in your classroom as a reminder of the shared agreement.

Add a Patriotic Twist to Story Time

Using story time to introduce the themes of Constitution Day can help make the topic more relatable and understandable for young children. Choose books that simplify the concept of rules, fairness, and leadership. I recommend the book We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States by David Catrow. This book provides a kid-friendly interpretation of the Preamble and uses engaging illustrations to explain what each part means. Another fun book is Duck for President by Doreen Cronin. This humorous story about a duck who runs for office is a great way to introduce children to the concept of voting and leadership. After discussing the books, you can have students draw their favorite part of the story or create their own illustrations of what they think a good rule is.

Create Patriotic Art Projects

It’s always a great idea to incorporate art into your lessons. As a group, you can have students create a large flag or mural made of handprints from each student. For individual crafts, have students create a collage using pictures from magazines or drawings that represent what freedom means to them. This can help personalize the concept of freedom and make it more relevant to their everyday lives.

Learn the Pledge of Allegiance

Teaching the Pledge of Allegiance is a great way to introduce young children to the idea of citizenship and respect for their country. Explain to the students that the Pledge of Allegiance is a way people in the United States show respect for their country. Keep the explanation simple and age-appropriate. Recite the Pledge of Allegiance together as a class. Break it down into short, easy-to-understand phrases, and explain the meaning of each part in simple terms. You could also create hand motions to help students remember the words and their meanings.

Assign Classroom Helpers

Role-playing is an excellent way to help children understand the concepts of rules, fairness, and good citizenship even within the “community” of their classroom. Assign each student a role as a “helper” for a day, such as line leader, door holder, or cleanup helper. Discuss how these roles help the classroom run smoothly and how everyone’s contributions are important.

Invite Guest Speakers

If possible, invite a police officer, firefighter, local government official, or parent who works in a related field to speak about their role in the community and how they help uphold the rules. This can provide a real-world connection to the idea of the Constitution and help children understand how rules apply outside of school.

Host a Mini Parade and Sing Patriotic Songs

End your Constitution Day celebration with a mini parade or a sing-along of patriotic songs. This can be a fun and memorable way to wrap up the day’s activities and celebrate the spirit of America. Students can march around the classroom or playground with their handmade flags or other patriotic crafts. Teach simple patriotic songs such as “America the Beautiful” or “This Land is Your Land.”

Celebrating Constitution Day in kindergarten is a wonderful opportunity to introduce young learners to the fundamental concepts of rules, fairness, and citizenship in an engaging and age-appropriate way. By using interactive activities, creative projects, and thoughtful discussions, you can help your students understand the importance of freedom in America and the value of working together to create a positive environment. With these fun and educational activities, Constitution Day can become a memorable and meaningful experience for your kindergarten class, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of good citizenship and a love of learning.

As the new school year begins, September brings a fresh start filled with excitement, curiosity, and new learning opportunities for kindergarten students. For teachers, this is a wonderful time to set the tone for the year, establish routines, and introduce engaging themes that capture the imagination of young learners. Here are some ideas for teaching in September that can help make this season of school both fun and educational for your kindergarten class.

Back-to-School and Classroom Routines

September is all about new beginnings, and the first few weeks are perfect for introducing classroom rules and routines. Establishing a sense of order and predictability helps young children feel safe and confident in their new environment. One thing you can do is to create a scavenger hunt that helps students familiarize themselves with your classroom layout, available materials, and centers.

You can use role-playing to teach social skills and classroom expectations. Young students may need visual reminders, in addition to role playing.

You can also start each day with a morning meeting to greet each other, discuss the day’s schedule, and share feelings. Having a class schedule helps young students know what to expect, which could potentially alleviate meltdowns.

All About Me

One of the most popular themes for kindergarten in September is “All About Me.” This theme allows students to share about themselves, share about their families, and learn more about their classmates. Students can create self-portraits and share about their favorite pets, color, food, and more!

Don’t forget Show-and-Tell! Students love bringing items from home that are special to them. This helps with public speaking skills and encourages listening and empathy among classmates.

Seasonal Changes: Welcome Fall

As September transitions into fall, it’s a great time to explore the changes in weather, nature, and the environment. Kindergarteners are naturally curious about the world around them, making this an ideal time to introduce concepts related to seasons and weather. You can take the class on a nature walk to collect different types of leaves. Back in the classroom, sort the leaves by color, shape, or size, and use them for art projects or science lessons.

With fall comes weather changes. You can create a daily weather chart with your students to track the changes throughout the month. Discuss different weather patterns, what clothes are appropriate for each type of weather, and how weather affects daily life.

Fall also means pumpkin everything! Take this opportunity to create hands-on pumpkin activities! Students can investigate the textures, colors, and sizes of pumpkins and even practice counting seeds for a math-related activity.

Friendship and Teamwork

September is a great time to emphasize the importance of friendship and teamwork in the classroom. Building a positive classroom culture early in the year helps reduce conflicts and encourages cooperation. You can have students make friendship bracelets for each other or create a classroom “Friendship Tree” where each child adds a leaf with their name and a positive adjective that describes them. You can also introduce games that require teamwork, such as “Parachute Play” or “Buddy Reading.” These activities help children learn the value of working together and supporting each other.

Community Helpers

Introducing the concept of community helpers is a fantastic way to help children understand the world around them and recognize the people who make their community function. To celebrate these heroes in our comminity, you can organize a dress-up day where students come dressed as their favorite firefighters, doctors, teachers, or even mail carriers. Encourage them to share why they chose that particular helper. Invite parents or community members who are willing to come in and speak about their jobs. This real-world connection can make the concept of community helpers more tangible for young learners.

Colors and Shapes

Learning about colors and shapes is fundamental in kindergarten. September provides the perfect opportunity to introduce these concepts through interactive and sensory-based activities. You can dedicate a day each week to a different color. Then, have students wear the color, bring an item of that color, and create an art project focusing on that color. This is another time where you can have a scavenger hunt and have students look for and identify shapes and colors in the world around them. A fun science activity might involve color-mixing experiments. This hands-on activity not only teaches color theory but also encourages scientific inquiry and observation skills.

Constitution Day

Constitution Day, celebrated on September 17th, is a fantastic opportunity to introduce young students to the concept of government and citizenship in a way that is meaningful to them. There are many age-appropriate ways to help kindergarteners understand the importance of rules, fairness, and being part of a community. For instance, you can:

Create a “Classroom Constitution” with your students. Discuss why rules are important in the classroom and what kinds of rules help everyone feel safe and respected. Together, write a simple set of classroom rules that all students agree to follow, and have them sign their names as a pledge to uphold these rules. This activity can help students understand the concept of the Constitution as an agreement or set of rules for everyone.

Read age-appropriate books about the Constitution or stories that illustrate the concept of fairness, such as “We the Kids: The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States” by David Catrow or “Duck for President” by Doreen Cronin.

Create simple patriotic art projects, such as making American flags or coloring pages with symbols of the United States. This activity can be paired with a discussion about national symbols and what they represent, such as freedom, unity, and democracy.

Teach the Pledge of Allegiance and explain what it means in simple terms. Practice reciting the pledge as a class and discuss the values it represents, such as loyalty and unity.

Use role-playing games to teach about rights and responsibilities. For example, you can create scenarios where students must decide how to handle different situations fairly or how to help each other in the classroom.

Host a mini parade in the classroom where students can march with their handmade flags and sing patriotic songs. This fun and engaging activity can help children feel proud of their country and understand the importance of national celebrations like Constitution Day.

In conclusion, September is a month full of promise and potential in a kindergarten classroom. By focusing on these engaging themes and activities, you can create a warm, welcoming environment that fosters a love of learning. Remember, the key is to make learning fun and interactive, helping your young students build a strong foundation for the rest of the school year. Here’s to a successful and joyful September!

Childhood is a challenging time for most children for various reasons. Kindergarten is an exciting time for kids, but it can also be stressful. Therefore, it is essential for children to develop healthy coping skills from an early age. These skills can benefit children as they move through the educational years and beyond. Let’s discuss how to teach coping skills to kindergarteners.

1. Identify and Embrace Emotions

One of the first steps in teaching healthy coping skills to kindergarteners is for them to identify and embrace their feelings. Encouraging children to talk about their emotions can help them feel seen. As a result, children ultimately learn and understand that their emotions are valid.

2. Practice Responsive Problem-Solving

Problem-solving is fundamental when it comes to ways to help kindergarteners cope with unwanted situations. By practicing problem-solving techniques, you can help your students sharpen their responses in any situation. It helps to talk to students about their problems and possible solutions they can use. Consequently, students develop healthy habits when coping with any given situation.

3. Teach Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques are essential when teaching coping skills to kindergarteners. When an unwanted situation arises, breathing techniques and other relaxation techniques can result in profound change. Thus, children can use deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, and play therapy sessions as calming techniques throughout life.

4. Use Effective Communication Skills

Effective communication improves conflict resolution and is a critical coping skill. In the early stages, teachers should emphasize active listening and sharing thoughts and emotions in a calm manner. This is fundamental in conflict resolution and helps maintain healthier friendships and relationships with others.

5. Encourage Role-Play Activities and Storytelling

Encouraging role-play activities and storytelling in the classroom can identify alternative solutions, which are valuable for students when teaching coping skills. Students get an opportunity to experience different situations thrown their way, enhancing their observation, problem-solving, and emotional capabilities.

In conclusion, teaching coping skills, even to kindergarteners, is essential to their emotional well-being and academic performance. Communication and problem-solving skills should take center stage in every area of the student’s daily life. Hopefully, the steps listed will help you in teaching these skills. After all, helping students develop healthy mental and emotional health is critical as they mature.

My new book, Beginner Cursive Handwriting Workbook for Kids: Learn and Practice Cursive with Confidence, releases December 28th and while it’s too late to go under your tree, this is the gift that keeps on giving. When my publisher pitched a cursive handwriting book that was focused on encouraging young learners through affirmations and providing a book where every child can see themselves through illustrations, my only response was, “Where do I sign?”

With Google Maps constantly at our fingertips, it is easy to let simple skills like understanding a map fall to the wayside. However, teaching map skills to young learners are still essential, even to young students like kindergarteners. For example, they can learn to make sense of a map, map key, and map symbols. These concepts can help students improve their spatial awareness and understand the world around them.

Use Directionality to Teach Map Skills

Essential skills students can take away from a kindergarten map unit are directionality and important directional words. For example, Cardinal directions on a compass rose like north, south, east, and west, and words like left and right are a great introduction to understanding map elements. In addition, these directions help students identify where a place is.

Sure, our kindergarteners might not be giving someone directions to the nearest restaurant or gas station, but they may help a friend find a toy with simple directions like, “Look to the left of the blocks,” or “The ball is on your right.” In teaching map skills, young children also learn simple directionality skills that they can apply in real life.

Teach Maps with Symbols

Symbols are another critical concept to cover when teaching map skills. Students probably don’t know that symbols stand for other things or haven’t entirely made the connection yet. Learning how to read a legend can help them understand these basic concepts. For example, they can see that a picture of a bus might represent a bus station, a badge may mean a police station, and a picture of fire could represent a fire station with an image of fire. Then, they can use that knowledge to find those important features on a map.

Learning that pictures can represent other things is a valuable skill that students can apply to many situations. For example, when students do addition and subtraction problems, they may draw a circle to represent flowers. Likewise, when discussing a weather graph, they need to know that a picture of the sun means a sunny day. Learning about symbols through map skills is a great way to help students grasp the concept of pictures representing other things.

Teaching Map Skills Helps Students Learn Places

Places are another critical concept that students can grasp when learning map skills. For example, when looking at a world map, students can see that oceans separate different continents. Seeing those continents and identifying parts of a map will translate into valuable skills they will need for academic learning.

For example, when you read a nonfiction book about animals to students, the book includes where the animal lives. Likewise, a nonfiction book about holidays or traditions likely mentions where those holidays or traditions originated. However, those facts are meaningless to early learners without prior knowledge about maps. In teaching map skills, you give students the ability to connect these facts to different places in the world.

Teaching Map Skills Helps Kids Learn Where They Live

When you ask students where they live, what do they say? Their state, their country, their city? Maybe they would even simply say in their house. Regardless of which answer they gave, they are correct, but this is a hard concept for kindergarteners to understand. It is hard for them to grasp that they live on a street that is in a city, in a city that is in a state, a state that is in a country, and so forth.

For this reason, I like to help students make sense of where they fit in the world by doing a circle booklet. As the circles of the book get smaller, so do the places they represent. This gives students spatial awareness by showing them they live in all of those places and that smaller places fit within larger places.

A kindergarten map unit is a great opportunity for students to learn new concepts such as map skills. They can identify key vocabulary terms, directionality, where different places are, and where they live. Not only is teaching map skills necessary, but it also helps students’ understanding of the world around them and gives them skills they can use outside of reading maps.

Teaching financial literacy to children at a young age may seem like a daunting task, especially when you think about how many aspects there are to financial literacy. Students need a clear understanding of money, wants and needs, and many other things for finances to make sense to them. There are also several key vocabulary terms they need to be taught, as they probably do not hear financial terms used often. However, it doesn’t have to be difficult as long as you have a clear idea of how to teach financial literacy to young children.

Step 1: Make Sure Students Have a Clear Concept of Money

One of the most important aspects to teaching financial literacy at an early age is the concept of money. Students need to understand the value of the different coins and bills. They also need answers to important questions about money, such as, “How do people get money?” and “What are some ways people can choose to spend their money?” Students need to understand that people can choose whether they want to spend or save their money in the real world.

You can ask younger children if they have a piggy bank at home and explain the concept of a savings account and savings goals that way. This will allow young kids to see that there is a connection to their own money. This would be a great time to engage younger kids by asking things like if they get a weekly allowance for household chores. You can also ask what they’d love to save up for—maybe it’s a video game or board games. Asking an engaging question like this speaks to potential financial decisions. Will they choose to save for what they want? Setting financial goals, even at a young age, can give them a head start in adapting good money habits and maintaining healthy financial responsibility.

As you can see, gaining a general concept of money is a great way to take a huge step toward students gaining financial literacy.

Step 2: Learn Key Terms

Another huge factor in students learning financial literacy is learning the key terms associated with financial literacy. Young children probably can’t define words like income, entrepreneurs, or goods and services because they aren’t words they hear and use in day-to-day life.

My Financial Literacy product includes clear, child-friendly definitions for each of these words and more. It also includes activities where students can apply these new vocabulary terms to real situations that they might encounter. For example, in one activity, students look at various pictures and decide if that scenario shows earned income or a gift. This will be sure to help them better understand larger financial concepts.

In order to become financially literate, young children need opportunities to learn and apply key terms associated with financial literacy. The best way is to start with a clear outline of those terms!

Step 3: Learn Why it is Important to Them

Like any skill we teach young children, students need to know why financial literacy is important to them and their lives. At this point, students probably understand that adults get jobs and then get paid. But what happens after that? Students need to know that in the future, they will get to choose their job. Some jobs provide goods or things to people, while others provide different services. As adults, they will also have to prioritize how their money is spent.

It is helpful to discuss how these things are applicable while they are still kids. Even children can have jobs, such as working lemonade stands or having a classroom job. Moreover, when children receive gifts of money, they have to decide whether to spend or save. Knowing that financial literacy has an application to their own lives is such an important step in helping students become financially literate. We briefly touched on this in step one as well!

Financial Literacy for Young Children Conclusion

All of these topics and more are in my Financial Literacy product! Your students will learn financial literacy and the value of money in a way that is beneficial to them. They can gain important life skills through the application activities in ways that are tailored to their level of understanding. They are already smart kids, but you can feel good knowing you played an important role helping them prepare for their futures while also addressing important math and social studies standards.

I hope you can now confidently explain the importance of financial literacy should you need help explaining a lesson plan or circuit to an advisor or board. Advocating for financial education, even for the youngest children, will give them a good chance at adopting healthy money habits and better money management skills into their teenage years and later into their adult life. Are there fun financial literacy lessons you enjoy teaching? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!

CELEBRATING DIVERSITY IN THE CLASSROOM IS IMPORTANT

When I was in the 1st grade, I was the only Caucasian female in my class. All the other girls were African American. I honestly never thought this was a big deal. People were people and I loved my classmates and I definitely loved school. My best friend was not the same color as me, neither was the first boy I had a crush on. At the time, my dad played drums and sang in a blues band and two of the band members were married, one black and one white. I don’t ever remember questioning that or thinking it was weird. I just loved those people!

We moved two years later and I attended a school where more children looked like me. As a child, this didn’t matter to me. I never felt out of place at the previous school. I think that is the beauty of young children, they do not live in a cultural box. They have the ability to see people for people and nothing more.

As I got older, I really didn’t understand why people even spoke of skin color or cultural difference. Goodness, I was born into Catholicism and when I was in the 2nd grade, I came home and asked my parents if I could be a Baptist. They let me go wherever the wind blew me so I decided to convert and I did. Ha.

Now that I am grown, I am so thankful for the experiences I had in my childhood. I am thankful that I didn’t live in a cultural box. For much of my childhood, we were poor. I don’t really remember that either though. I just remember the people and the memories with my family. All of them. Now, I did get teased but not because of my skin color, wealth or ever changing religion. Let’s just say, I was born a plus size model. Ha.

Fast forward to adulthood and now I am a wife, mother of three young adults and a growing passion for education. I would love to say that the climate of the world has changed for the better, but I don’t believe that is the case. We live in a world consumed with comparison, which definitely is the thief of joy. People have lost their ability to be kind and love one another. It’s disheartening. I do believe that we are all capable though. It has to start somewhere. For me, it started in my home and always overflowed into my classroom.

Teachers spend more time with children than anyone else and have the opportunity to really make a difference in our cultural climate. A student’s success is highly impacted and affected by school culture, which is why it is important that the celebration of diversity in the classroom is made a priority. Though the subject of diversity may not be included (as it should be) in a teacher’s daily objectives, it is necessary in creating a classroom climate of family and a celebration of what makes each person unique.

Being aware of their cultures, their ethnicity, their language, their color and their physical ability can affect student’s performance in a negative or positive way, depending on how they are received in in the classroom. Teachers have the ability to teach children the importance of self-worth and the importance of celebrating their individual differences. Why is this so important?

DIVERSITY IS BROAD: Diversity is not straight forward and direct. It can be broad and confusing. Schools are advised to encourage the celebration of diversity for this main reason. There are so many differences between ethnic groups and racial groups but also many similarities if we take the time to really learn about one another. Different cultural characteristics may be shared by students from very different families and backgrounds but are unknown unless the uniqueness of each child recognized and embraced.

CULTURAL AWARENESES: Each culture is so unique. When children understand and share how that they speak different languages, have different beliefs and come from various backgrounds, it helps other children embrace the beauty of what makes them unique. Instead of setting themselves apart, we celebrate how we are a different but together we share the same love language and that is what makes a family, even a classroom family. Allow students to bring clothing, food, and mementos that reflect their culture to create a greater understanding is important.

STEREOTYPES: Celebrating diversity will open a whole new door to a different kind of thinking and understanding for each student. They need to understand that it is totally okay that we are all from different families and backgrounds. Together we can still learn and grow. Teach students the importance of knowing each person is an individual and it’s important that we don’t categorize people.

LEARNING CAN BE IMPROVED: By laying a knowledgeable foundation for diversity, we have the ability to enhance students’ social expectations, habits and ability to work together without preconceived impairments. Children are born with the ability to unconditionally love all people. We need to foster and grow that to create a climate of love as they grow into adults.

You may share my frustration with today’s cultural climate (and intolerance) but just being frustrated is not enough. Change starts with one person and it can start with you. This is not a political post so please do not interpret it to be. This is about our ability to be a living example of a loving person. If anything, we can always be kind.

With many classrooms becoming inclusive, it is important to talk to children about physical disabilities. At first children might be curious about another student with disabilities, and their first instinct might be to stare. Instead, take the time to consider these 6 ways to explain physical disabilities to kids so you can instead encourage a conversation. This way, kids can be more familiar with disabilities and know how to handle these instances in the classroom and life.

Ask them what they may already know about physical disabilities.

It is a good idea to first understand what impressions your child has about physical disabilities. Ask them what they know about physical disabilities, or find out if they know anyone with physical disabilities. This can help you decide where exactly to start your conversation.

Find things the child has in common with a child with physical disabilities.

A child may not immediately see that another child with a physical disability has a great deal in common with them. Make a list of the things a child with a disability and your own child may have in common. Some ideas to consider could be favoring the same movies, television shows, snacks, and animals. This can help them see that children with disabilities aren’t so different.

Explore children’s books that discuss the topic of disabilities.

There are many children’s books out there that can help children explore disabilities. Some books you may want to enjoy with your child include Don’t Call Me Special by Pat Thomas. This is a great read that explores disabilities in a child friendly way.

Invite them to ask you any questions they might have.

Invite your child to ask any questions they might have. Reserve any judgements and allow them to speak freely. This way you can tackle any concerns they may have or anything that seems to be confusing them. Things seem less scary if kids are free to ask questions and know you won’t be surprised or judgmental.

Discuss the protocol when meeting someone with a disability.

As mentioned, the first instinct for many kids when meeting someone with a disability is to stare. Talk about what a proper protocol is. Some ideas include simply saying hello, not staring, introducing yourself if appropriate, and not focusing on the disability but on the person.

Talk about ways to help a child with physical disabilities.

Children love to help, so their first instinct might be to do everything for another child who has a disability. Children should know that people with disabilities prefer to be independent. Encourage children to ask first before assisting a person with a disability, so they aren’t overstepping boundaries or taking away the person’s independence.

While the concept of physical disabilities can be confusing for children at first, having an open and honest conversation with them can help. Consider these 6 ways to explain physical disabilities to kids, and see how they can help.

Be blessed.

Play should be a child’s most important “job”. This work has been taken out of so many classrooms as we push kids academically beyond what is developmentally appropriate. Play is necessary for the healthy development of children. Research shows that 75% of the brain is formed after birth. Play stimulates the brain, which is necessary to develop gross motor and fine motor skills, both things necessary in the learning process.

I get emails from teachers all over the globe asking for advice since they have been told they cannot have a home living center. My answer is always the same, follow the child. If they are craving something in the learning process, it’s clearly what they need. You don’t need to have a play kitchen to have a home living center. I learned that several years ago. I gave away my kitchen because it was very old and falling apart. I intended on replacing it but never got around to it before school started. Guess what I figured out? It didn’t matter. My kids didn’t NEED a kitchen to have a home living center. For all intensive purposes, you can walk into my classroom and assume I have no home living center but I do AND it’s my students’ favorite thing to do in the history of ever.

My home living center consists of a small table that I bought for $10 at Ikea. It has two stools I bought for $5 at Ikea and a bucket that fits perfectly under that small table full of play food, dishes, table mats, etc. I try and keep my back counter clear too so they can expand their creativity. There are also a few fake portable phones which always hold the most entertainment when listening to their conversations, such as the little boy putting the pizza guy on hold to talk to Labron James. Ha!

My point is that you don’t have to have a kitchen. You don’t need to have a ton of space. You just need an area where children can go and let their imaginations run wild. They just need the gift of time to play and yes this is just as important, if not more during this stage of learning, than anything else.

But why is this so important?

PRETEND PLAY: Do you remember pretending to be different characters when you were little? I do. I always played school with my little sister. I kept every paper I made and used it to teach my “class” when I got home. Imagine that. Ha! Imaginative play never loses its appeal. In my “home living center” box, I have several dress up vests so children can be a chef, a doctor, a vet, etc. I want them to imagine themselves being those characters one day. It could be the beginning of a new lifelong dream. You have no idea what seeds are planted through play. Children can be whomever they want and sometimes they need that opportunity to escape their own reality, which is too hard to bear. When they realize they can be anything they want through imaginative play, they build self-confidence. Self-confidence leads to exploring new things which helps them grow academically, socially and emotionally.

COMMUNICATION: Children learn so much from talking to one another. My principals have always told me that I have a high tolerance for noise. I’ve never understood this. Shouldn’t children be allowed to talk? I don’t let my kids disturb learning but I do think collaborative learning is absolutely developmentally appropriate. Children learn through our example and often we are THE example of how to have a conversation. Have you ever role played with your kids on how to introduce themselves, make eye contact, shake a hand or ask questions? If you haven’t, start tomorrow! This is so important.

I learn a lot about a child and what they are exposed to at home by listening to their conversations and interactions in home living. I am able to chime in and offer friendly guidance as to the proper way to speak or problem solve. Home living gives kids great opportunities to problem solve with peers. What to cook, who should be the mom, how to set a table or sweep. The process of looking for solutions to problems develops analytical skills your child. They are given the opportunity to think outside the box and compare decisions with their peers.

PLAY promotes social and language development. An hour of play is just as important in developmental learning as doing activities deemed to be strictly educational. Children need opportunities to practice sharing, manners, working out problems and understanding the proper ways to deal with real life scenarios. More importantly, children view play as FUN. They don’t realize the amount of leaning that is taking place in those moments. There is no pressure to perform. They just get to enjoy experiences with their friends.

So teachers, let’s lose the idea that a home living center revolves around a play kitchen. If your school will not let you have one anymore, let’s not let that be an end all be all. We can still create an area where imagination comes to life and find ways to make it meet a standard if necessary.

Start hitting up garage sale, family, friends and your local Wal Mart. Buy a plastic tea set, play food, cooking utensils, dress up costumes, play money, stuffed animals and dolls, band aides and plastic tools. Give your students the creative freedom to live in an imaginary world where they make all of the decisions, solve all of the problems and learn to cope in life situations all in the comfort and protection of your classroom walls. Just because our educational system has beefed up the standards does not mean that kids are no longer kids. What was developmentally appropriate twenty years ago is still very relevant today. After all, we were allowed to play for hours AND take naps and we didn’t turn out so bad.

#bringthekitchenback

#playisheretostay
