I finally felt most of my students were ready to move on past labeling so we tried this lesson again this week and it went well. J We reviewed our steps: 1. Brainstorm, 2. Draw and label (must use at least five colors) 3. Label (must label at least three things) 4. Write sentence. They are supposed to write a simple sentence made up of word wall words we have learned and one label they pull down from their picture. We won’t always label, this just teaches them to pull down words from their illustration because a good author makes sure their illustration matches their text. J These are my lessons from Monday and Wednesday. I had students tell me what to label on my pictures, and then come up and write the word. Phonetic spelling is very important at this stage of writing and I think they did great. Then, I had a student write the sentence for me too. If they make a mistake, they just put an X over it. We do not erase. J

This week I did a lot of cleaning and organizing in my room. (LOVE that!) One of the things I did was put all of my WWS beginning lessons on the wall. I put a piece of red paper behind them so they would stand out. I have referenced them several times since and the students are going to them to check their steps. I love that! I will update and make changes as we progress but I think it is important to continously provide this visual every day. Next to it I also have my environmental print tree. I tell kids that they already know how to read because of EP and they can use these labels in their writing too.
Happy Friday!
What are you doing this weekend?
I love your examples – I would love to create some of my own for my students, but I cant see them close enough to read what all they say. Do you have any close ups?
Great job. These are fabulous.

I love every single last bit of this post. 🙂
A Teeny Tiny Teacher
I love this approach to teaching writing. I always struggle with teaching my kiddos how to write. I've been working through a similar process because I was inspired by you. Last week I was evaluated for the first time this year and we worked on labeling and they did awesome. So thanks for the inspiration.
Mrs. Payton, did you look at my earlier posts on writer's workshop? There are close ups in each lesson of each chart along with explanations. 🙂 Let me know if that doesn't help and I will email you the pictures.

Thanks so much for these posts. I was looking for something to make my writing lessons better and I think this is just the ticket I was looking for. Thank you for the awesome inspiration! I posted my version of this lesson today. It went really well. :)Thanks again!

Thank you so much for these posts. They have been very inspirational and given me lots of ideas on how to teach writing in my class. I especially loved your honesty in your evaluations, the clear photographs of your work, and the examples of the children's work. Thanks again.
