One of my students’ favorite things ever is Flashlight Friday! I use my own version of the Daily 5 in my
classroom and Read to Self is a big part of that. During the week, students read with their
book boxes somewhere in the room. They can choose on the floor or at a seat. They can sit or lay. Read to Self helps them build reading stamina. On Fridays, everyone gets a flash light,
finds a cozy spot to read, and we turn off the lights. We read for 15-30 minutes. It such an easy and exciting task that really
motivates kids to be more disciplined during the week at Read to Self. I have asked parents to donate flash lights and batteries in the past or I would just purchase them myself. Seriously, you could hear a pin drop during this time.

This was not my original idea.
I saw one of my teaching partners, Paula, doing this a few years ago and LOVED
it. I went out and bought small flash
lights from the Dollar Tree and we were in business. Now, a good teacher would
have taken pictures of this before going on Spring Break, but this teacher
FORGOT!. Gasp! I know. I grabbed this cute little pic of flashlight reading
online.
