Greetings friends! I hope that you had a great time “attending” Everything’s Kindergarten Expo! Did you wear your pj’s? I’m jealous. I thought about wearing mine but that wouldn’t be professional, or would it? Are there rules when presenting virtually? Not that I am a rule breaker…not me! Ehem.
If you didn’t sign up, it’s not too late. Once the event goes live, you will have access to it as much as you like at your convenience in the future so it’s not too late to join in on the fun. Click here for details.
So, tell me….I am dying to know…what did you think? Did you learn a new trick? I have been SO NERVOUS. When presenting in person, I think my personality shines a little bit more because we know I can be really a little crazy silly and sarcastic but that was hard to do when talking to a web cam. You should be proud of me…I totally wore my big girl panties and tried to be very professional, ehem. J You got that vibe right?
Anywho, so I am here in blogville right now eagerly waiting to hear your feedback from the expo and answer your questions. Please let me know if there is anything that I can expand on or provide clarity if necessary.
Just waiting…crickets so far….oh please leave me a comment or a small ray of sunshine before I just jump out the window. Okay, that is dramatic. I don’t have a two story house. And, I am scared of heights. Who am I kidding? I may just eat ice cream. Oh the calories! Stop me now! Haha!
I realize I used the word “utilized” a lot and sometimes not correctly, what can I say? J
Oh, and I just realized that I forgot to cover Author Celebrations! OOPS!! When I have an “Author’s Celebration” we will take a piece of writing that is completed, create some sort of cover for it, bind it or staple it in cardstock, and have a special sharing time where students get to sit in a special “authors chair” and I invite a special guest (our principal, instructional coach, another teacher, etc.). Did I mention how special it is? J At the end of the year, we have an Author’s Celebration where all the parents come and we celebrate their work with their family. It is pretty sweet!
Okay peeps. I’m here if you need me. Thanks for stopping by! Did I mention you can leave me a comment? J Check back tomorrow too because I am having a giveaway where EVERYONE is a winner!!!
(Ok…now it’s your turn to talk…cue typing….)
Also, I am having a sale this weekend for Expo Appreciation (I totally just made that up.)!! Everything in my stores are 20% off. If you want my Polar Bear & Penguin Unit you have to get it on TPT though because I couldn't get it uploaded to TN for some reason. It's on sale there too though.
You can find me on facebook too for live chat!
Sharon Dudley says
Crystal, I didn't see the Expo. I'm sorry that I can't give you feedback about that. I'm having a contest right now on my blog to give away some really sweet Valentine games. I have three different prizes, so come and take a look.

I"m loving your presentation. I'm only in the first part of your presentation, but it is so helpful! Question…if I don't get a chance to watch all of the presentations today, will they still be available to watch tomorrow?
Crystal says
Absolutely. I still go back to the last few expos that were several months ago and get a refresher. Everytime I watch one, I learn something new. I know my presentation covers A LOT so I would actually recommend watching it more than once. 🙂 Great question!!
Kari S. says
Great! I love to just watch the first time and take things in, and then take notes the second time to really digest it!
Sweet P's Boutique says
I am having trouble viewing the presentations. They won't play. I have a new computer so I know it is not me. Is the website having trouble?
Crystal says
We just got an email from the administrator of the site saying that it is packed right now and they are working out all of the technical issues. It should be better soon. 🙂
Sweet P's Boutique says
I hope so because I have been waiting for this and I am so excited. :)) I know…I am a dork. 🙂

How's it going Sweet P?

I feel like I can attack writer's workshop with new zeal! I have been thinking a lot about it lately and feel like I needed a kick this year to step up my game. Your ideas were just what I needed! THANKS!

Glad to hear I am not the only one having trouble viewing your presentation. I will keep checking back.

Crystal, Thank you so much for your presentation. We had a one day common core LA training at the beginning of the year on how to do a K writers workshop and I was overwhelmed with everything. Thanks for making it seem do-able in K!

Crystal, thank you so much for your presentation. I've done Kid Writing for years and love the format, but after all the blog stalking I've done I've been ready for a change. Your ideas will help me as I continue in my transformation and ultimately help my students.

Just finished watching your presentation. It was wonderful! I loved all your ideas. Our school uses Lucy Calkins also, but the way you handle it seems much more fun for teacher and students alike. I can't wait to use all the things I learned.

Thanks Sandi! I am sure there is a better way but I just pull my ideas out of my you know what. LOL! Thanks for popping by. I hope you will again.

Crystal, at the end of your video you said that you hoped that I found at least one thing that I can use. OMG I have many many many ideas that I want to use. You have inspired me. I was just telling one of my co-workers how disenchanted I was with writer's workshop. I feel that you have breathed new life into me. I like what you said about keeping it simple and doable (did I spell that right???) I can't wait to get started with all of your ideas. Is there a way to save your presentation. There was so much that I will need to go back and watch again and again and again! Thank you so so much!

I'm half way through your presentation and am loving it. I tried launching writing a story and have not been very successful. I can not wait to try relaunching it again with your beginning, middle, and end idea. For the lift of me, I can not get some of my kinders to finger space. Any suggestions? My standard bag o' tricks do not seem to be working.
Looking forward to watching the rest a little later tonight. I have to tend to my 4 yr old.
So far, I love it!
Crystal says
S.Parker, Thanks. Good question! I use these astronaut wooden spacemen at first to help them with spaces. I think this year it has been easier because of the numbers on the sides of the paper. Because they have to do this to check it off, they are more conscious about it. Does that help?
Fran Kramer says
You were so adorable and funny. I loved this presentation but it was so full of ideas that my brain is broken. I am amazed by you.You deserve the entire weekend off and have those teens wait on you! Okay that will never happen but a girl can dream- right? When are you coming to California to visit? You can come to my room and clean up my act. I really enjoyed your kidwriting examples and all the creative ways you get little ones to write. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and making them so clear. I had no idea that you were one bit nervous. Yes, you were a total professional today.. quite impressive. Hey we should take this on the road… any road. Never mind I get lost easily.

What label is your WWS paper freebie under? You are so talented! I was engaged during that entire presentation!!! This is my first year as a kindergarten teacher and I have been struggling so much getting my WWS up and going. THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! Thank you for graciously sharing all of your information and insight with us!

I can not get the last segment to finish. It stops right after she switches to Caden's piece. Any ideas why? It has been great so far and I want to continue!! Great ideas!!!

Oh my goodness! This is just what I needed! I teach in an all day public Pre-K setting. I am only on the second section and I am ready to change all my lesson plans for next week! You did a wonderful job. I have been doing this for 30 some years and still learn new things EVERYday. Very inspiring and great ideas for my emergent writers. Thanks so much…and who knew I could learn so much walking on a treadmill?? 🙂 Thanks again!!
Carey says
You were great!! I have tried writing so many ways and never feel successful, regardless of how many books I read and try to implement. I am excited to implement the steps that you shared with us. I now feel that I can be successful at carrying out writer's workshop and helping my students become better writers, after watching you. Thank you so much!! 🙂 I might need to ask you questions along the way.

You did a greta job! I enjoyed every bit. My favorite was the WWS REference wall. To give kids a visual of what they should be working on whether it be labels or sentences was great! LOVE IT!!!
I too was wondering what your 3 pg story starter sheet is under. I looked on your site under Writer's Workshop, but can't find it. You all did a great job.
Thanks!

Wow! That was amazing!! THANK YOU so much for sharing your expert ideas (: Writing (that i have seen so far, as i am in my final year of student teaching) Encourage the students to write and then illustrate, which seems very backwards compared to your ideas! I love the way that your students are encouraged to be authors! how gorgeous!! Thanks for sharing, i am truly inspired (:

Crystal, I loved your presentation and learned so much about Writer's Workshop (learned about it in college, but haven't taught in a school that utilized it). I teach half-day K so implementing 45 mins to an hour to it is not quite feasible, but I am hoping to implement many of your ideas and strategies whenever I can! Thanks for the great presentation on WWS!!

Hey girl,
You're probably not still online, but I have a question about your vocabulary books. Do you spell the words for the students, like paper, desk, teacher etc?
Also with the poetry center, where do they write in or highlight what you're wanting them, on your chart or in their individual books?
And last thing- you have more than just sight words on your word wall?

Wow. This was awesome. I started blogging back before Christmas and have spent many hours looking, searching, brainstorming. I have really been wanting more info on creating a really good writing center. This will help. I have also been concerned that I wasn't doing a good enough job on daily journals. Well, now I know what i need to do. Thanks for sharing and i cant wait to share with my peers. Email me whatever it was that you can send to add to the writer's workshop. bwilson@alex.k12.al.us thanks again. you were great.Bonny in Alexander City, Alabama.

I am LOVING your presentation, especially part 2 that gives some order and organization to writer's workshop in Kindergarten! I wish I had had this at the beginning of the year as this is my first year in Kindergarten. Now I know how to start next year! Question…We have to start the year off with journals and the students must write in them daily. They have to be able to free write every day. How would you fit this in when you're doing Interactive and Shared Writing in the few months of school? Thanks again for all of your ideas!
Crystal says
Hey friends. I am back online. Hubs took kids and I to dinner because my brain was a little fried with the expo so I forgot how to make dinner. Believeable right? ANywho, we went out to eat so my house is still clean. Yay for that! My daughter and I went to the movies after. She wanted to see that tear jerker movie with Tom Hanks but I wasn't emotioanlly ready for that tonight. So, we saw the new movie with Kathrine Heigl. It was cute.
Anywho, back to WWS. I thought my beginning, middle, end ws was posted here but I guess not. I actually made a handout for the expo but it didn't make it in for some reason so if you email me, I will send it to you. It includes main points from my presentation and a few writing worksheets for WWS. Let me know if you need anything else. You can find me on Facebook too. I usually have it open at night when I am working on units or blog stuff so if you want to chat, just chime in. 🙂
In regards to my vocabulary books, yes I have them written on the writing board in the writing center. In all of the units I create, I have vocab/picture cards that go with that theme. I put the pictures with the words so they can copy them. If you click on "Literacy Centers" to the right, it should bring up pictures of my centers at various times and there are some examples there. If I haven't answered your questions, let me know. Don't forget to send me your email addresses. My email is kreativekinder@yahoo.com.
Sleep tight!!

Oh, I didn't spell check that comment…oh well. Forgiveness please! 🙂
Crystal says
Sarah,
I actually start their writing (outside of WWS)with journals. We have a morning journal that we start the first week of school. They come in every morning and grab their spiral. We write word wall words, colors, sentences…I use it for math concepts or to make charts. The journal is a great catch all and no matter the content, they are writing. I still have a morning journal but right now they are using it for word work every morning. When I go to school on Monday, I will take pictures of my journals so you can see how we start the year and what we are doing now. I have a math journal too that we just started this semester that they bring to the carpet during calendar. I use it for several different things, covering different concepts each day. I hope that helps a little. Look for a post next week on journals though and if I forget, don't feel bad reminding me. I am chasing my tail most days. 🙂

I loved your presentation. Good job!!! My question is do your students write a paragraph (kinder style)using the beginning, middle and end pictures, one picture and three sentences?
Sarah says
It's me again now that I've finished watching your FABULOUS presentation!!! 2 questions…1. How many students do you typically conference with on a daily basis? I swear I change it by the year! 2. What font did you use for your Resource slide at the end where is says "Writer's Workshop" at the bottom of the slides with the resource books? 😉 Thanks SO much for your valuable resources and knowledge!!!

Thank you SO much for such a quick reply to the journal question! I can't wait to see pictures. I LOVE the idea of a morning journal so they are writing daily! That was so sweet of your family to take you out! You deserved it!!!

You did a great job! We do Writer's workshop at the school I teach at and the only thing I see missing which really helps is a warm up. Everyday before we write the students get togehter on the carpet and take their alphabet chart with pictures and we "warm up." Just like people warm up before they play sports. Every child has an alphabet chart with pictures for each letter sound and they point as we say it together. Say letter Aa (as students points) apple sound "a" Aa say letter acorn sound "a". This really helps the students. We do the whole alphabet chart. Kind of hard to descibe I hope you understand. Great Job!

Crystal,
I LOVED your presentation! After watching the expo, yesterday, I sat down and wrote a review on my blog about it. I had so many ideas bursting in my head, that it started hurting! But I just wanted to stop by and thank you for sharing your ideas because:
When I was a little girl, I dreamed of growing up to become an author of children's books. As you can tell, I'm not an author. My first grade teacher asked me to read a sentence from a book, aloud in front of my class. I didn't read the sentence well. My teacher kept correcting me over and over until I was completely embarrassed. After that, I decided reading wasn't for me. And I eventually got the idea that I would never become an author of children's books. So instead, I decided to teach.
I am so glad that you made this presentation. I hope that teachers have been inspired by your suggestion of leaving their students with some positive feedback. Otherwise, they may have their dreams crushed too!
Thanks again!

Crystal,
I was totally engaged and l.o.v.e.d every minute of your presentation. A little about me: I am a first year teacher, and was blessed to get a job in Kindergarten. I will admit I was nervous and a little apprehensive about getting my first job in Kindergarten. I am the only Kindergarten teacher in our district and use blogs to feel connected to fellow Kindergarten teachers.
Writer's Workshop was something I did a workshop on in while in college and couldn't wait to use it in my classroom someday! Well here it is the middle of the year and I haven't implemented the writing program I am satisfied with. I have felt completely defeated with getting it going and more importantly making it effective. Your class gave me the excitement again to help my kinder kids be a writer when they leave my room. THANK YOU….THANK YOU……THANK YOU! The anchor charts were so powerful I can't wait to start writing in my room.
A few questions:
How do you decide what mini lessons to start with on how to build on them so they flow for the kids.
Thank You again from a very appreciative 1st year teacher

I absolutely loved your presentation!! I don't do a formal, daily writers workshop, but writing is one of my favorite things to work on with my little kinder friends. It is such a good indicator of what they are learning and how much they understand about the connections between letters, sounds, words, sentences, illustrations…you get the idea! Anyways, I am so excited, I am already planning to start the beginning, middle, end hand signal and writers workshop paper you showed. I will have to find a way to fit it in this week because I am that excited!! Thank you for sharing all of this with us! From reading your blog I know you worked hard on this presentation and were nervous, so I hope you know that your work paid off! I am ready to get my kids even more excited about writing! First let me say that I LOVED YOUR PRESENTATION!!! It was so informative and EXACTLY what I have been needing. I too was wondering how many students do you conference with daily, are you able to get to them all or just a few? Also, the poems in your poetry center, are they poems that you introduce when they are placed in the center, or have you already read and reread them several times prior to putting them into the center? Again, thank your for all your wise words. I have learned so much.
I would also like to receive the handouts that did not make it into the presentation if you are willing to send them to me! My email is jfutch@long.k12.ga.us.

Ok, I lied. My eyes are still open so I am going to let myself stay up a few more minutes to answer a few questions. LOL
Lucy,
My kids write BME and it depends on their individual capabilities as to how many sentences each page will hold. I like a bigger middle with details so that is usually two sentences but if they are writing well, each page may have two sentences or even more. So far, that's not the case this year but we may be able to get there. 🙂 Does that help?
Crystal says
Sarah…
1. How many students do you typically conference with on a daily basis? Some days I get to everyone depending on my goal. I may want to conference with everyone before they write for 30 seconds each to talk about their writing or meet with just a handful through out the wws time. It depends.
2. What font did you use for your Resource slide at the end where is says "Writer's Workshop" at the bottom of the slides with the resource books?
Hmmm…I am not sure. I will have to look into that one. 🙂 I have soooo many fonts!!
Sarah says
LOL! No worries! I have lots of fonts too but not that one! 😉 Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! We have a teacher workday tomorrow so I can't wait to get to work on all of my new ideas and implement beginning Tuesday! I hope this Virtual PD becomes a yearly tradition!!!

Hi friends! Please don't think I am ignoring you. I came home from school with a fever today. I feel just terrible. I will return emails tomorrow. Please forgive me. In the mean time, I have set up a link so you can download the Beginning, Middle, & End Worksheet right now. Thanks!
Blessings,
Crystal

Friends,
If you left your email, I sent you my WWS packet. Here are the answers to the rest of the questions. 🙂
Lucy, I will have another sale this weekend. Your wish is my command! LOL
Erin, my mini lessons go in order of the presentation. I will present the same step over and over in a mini lesson until I feel like they are ready to move on. I have moved on before and it was a hot mess so we had to go back and try again when they were ready. It really depends. Follow most of the class because they will all move at different paces. 🙂 I hope that helps.
Jenny, I introduce the poem the week before it goes in centers. We read it every day so the children have it almost memorized. We do several activities with the poem before it goes into a center. 🙂
Heather, YES I absolutely do literacy centers. My kids LOVE centers. We do centers for about 45 minutes. We don’t have a nap time though. I will post my schedule in an upcoming post for you to see how my days goes.
Love and virtual hugs!
<>< Crystal

I follow both blogs and love them. I will have to start a facebook page so I can follow everyone on it. We can not access facebook at school so it is a little hard to keep up. hcarpenter@ebrschools.org

I just watched your virtual teaching expo piece on writing and thought you did a wonderful job – I have been teaching for 25 years and really like your sequence of how to get children to write. I am going to "beef" mine up using some of your ideas – thank you so much –

I loved your presentation and want to thank you for sharing all your wonderful ideas. I have to give a presentation to all the staff on writing at our school. As a new teacher I was really worried about my presentation. You gave me some great ideas. I was wondering if you had any more ideas on how to cover the common core standards. Have you seen the student examples in the appendix of the common core standards? The examples have like 7-8 sentences. What do you think of this? I would also like your handouts. Do you use a Promethean Board in your class? Have you made any flipcharts? I believe a pen and paper is the best way to model myself for many reasons but we are now suppose to use our boards instead. If you have any flipcharts or are thinking of ways to make some please let me know. Would you mind if I tried to use some of your chart ideas for mine? I am not selling them. I am not the best flipchart maker. They would be for classroom use only. Thank you so much. Please let me know if there are any other expos for Kindergarten. Thanks again. rrobinson@basd.k12.wi.us

Crystal, I just finished watching your presentation. I have the day off so I finally had the time to devote to it. I loved it. It was just what I needed. I've been struggling with writer's workshop all year long. I can't seem to figure out how to fit it in. But I feel like I can use a lot of your ideas and set the groundwork for my students next yea since I have them first grade too. You're so wonderful and inspirational. I would love any other handouts you have. kheinrich9@gmail.com

Hi Crystal,
I finally got to sit down and watch your presentation. Kudos to you, from one of your blog followers! 🙂 Very well done presentation. I can definitely take back ideas immediately to use in my classroom! Thank you so much!

Crystal, just watched your presentation again and am thinking about next year. How do you organize the student's writing and how much do you save or send home? It seems like with all of the loose sheets of paper, it would be hard to save and would quickly build up. I'm struggling right now with keeping writing samples both in journals and writing folders. You want to be able to show progress to parents, but at the same time, space is limited. Any help or pics would be appreciated. Thank you,
Shauna
