Hey all Kreative in Kinder folks.
I am little old Mary from Sharing Kindergarten
I am here to share with you
something I created that has changed the way my student learn sight words forever!
Let me introduce you to
For years, I have been teaching sight words through activities, games, and more.
My students have been doing well with them,
but I knew there ability to connection to the words was missing.
They could all read the words, but I needed them to be working with the words more.
Much more…
MUCH MUCH more.
I needed them reading, writing, spelling, building, working with these words.
THAT is how they learn these words!
So, I can up with the idea of spending 10- 20 minutes a day working
with specific words in a station format.
And my little loves ate it up…
We did these stations the whole month in January.
My students BEGGED for sight word stations.
They LOVED it.
Most importantly, they LEARNED their words better through the stations.
EVERY student in my room learned at least one word a week.
Most of my students learned at least 5 out of the 6 words a week.
A lot of my student learned all 6 words each week.
But, I couldn't keep up with the prep.
I simply didn't have an hour to plan and another hour to prep the stations my students
wanted,
needed,
and deserved.
So, my computer and I spend a few snow days together
{because who didn't have 7 this year?}
and we thawed out from the snow with results.
I created these Sight Word Stations with 14 stations
PER week to pick and choose from
to engage your learners in 6 specific sight words per week.
Here is the word breakdown from the Primer sight word list.
I am talking print, easy prep, and go!
Let me walk you through the Sight Word Station prep process.
I print out the few colored pages need for this unit.
{I believe I printed 8 colored sheets only for this week}
And I ran the sheets through the laminator.
{Yes, I have one at my house because they are super cheap
and the lamination thicker and better than my school one.
Plus, it was a Christmas present.
These are my sentence scrambles, memory pieces, and word puzzles sheets.
Then, I shove all my pages into a folder.
I always print onto card stock at home and
I make sure to print the sight word tents
onto card stock as well so they stand up better.
So, here are my two tents for this pack.
Then, if I have time,
I print out one page of each sheet I want for that week at home…
just because it makes my planning easier.
Here are the sheets I planned to use this week at school.
I always plan an extra activity or two since my students LOVE these stations so much.
Once I get to school, I run my sheets through the copier and take them back to my room.
I lay out my 6 baskets I use at my work tables.
I reset these stations in minutes.
Seriously… it takes me about 3 minutes to reset the baskets
with the new work for the upcoming week.
{5 minutes tops when I cut out the pieces I need to from my laminated sheets.}
This picture is of the baskets after the week was done.
I collect the reusable work and place in baggies.
Then, I place everything I need to save into a file folder.
SOOO easy.
Now, I put my new stations in the work baskets.
I take a minute to check pencils, water color paints, and other supplies they may need.
But since the stations stay pretty consistent from week to week, it is a fast process.
Here is a BIG suggestions I have recently added to manage my stations.
I add a laminated, color coded CLASS LIST to each basket
AND an overhead marker.
These class lists are provided so my students can cross their names off
the color coded list when they are done with each station.
{These class lists are face down for the pic since they contain student names.}
Here is a close up shot of one of the baskets that is ready to go for Sight Word Stations.
The activity is in the basket along with the materials needed {pencils and crayons} as well as a color coded cross off sheet and marker.
Then I stack all my Sight Word Stations baskets for our amazing learning time!
I know you want to see more of these stations in action and get some more tips to make them successful in your classroom…
