This CVCE Mystery Words Hands-On Center is the perfect year-round center for your young reader to practice using their beginning sound reading skills to create a mystery CVCE word. This set includes 36 different CVCE words. Students will look at the image and pick out the beginning sound. Then, they will find the correct letter and place it on the box below. Once they have figured out all four beginning sounds, they will be able to read the CVCE word. For additional practice, you can have them write the word after they have built it.

In this set, you will find seven literacy center activities/games and nine math center activities/games that your students will love. Once explained, students should be able to complete the work independently. I would suggest printing on cardstock and laminating for longevity.

The literacy centers will reinforce the following skills: sight words, blends, digraphs, beginning & ending sounds, CVC words, word families, and syllables.

The math centers will reinforce the following skills: Counting, Number Sequencing, 2D shapes, Subitizing, Writing Numbers to 20, Addition, Subtraction, and Ten Frames to 20.

This Spring Literacy Games set is perfect for March through May and has so many options.
 
Games Include
  • Roll and Cover (6 different themes): In this editable game, you can type in letters or sight words for students to work on. They roll the die and cover the correct letter or word. You do not need any special software to edit these games.
  • Read the CVC Word: (6 different themes): In this game, students will find the correct word to lay on top of the pictures on the game board.
  • That’s a match! (6 different themes): In this game, students will find the matching lowercase or capital letter to put on the game board pictures.
  • Beginning Sounds Sort (8 different themes): In this game, students will find the correct picture to place on top of the letters on the game board for the correct beginning sound.
  • Is It A Letter Or A Word? (8 different themes): In this game, students will sort the letters and words on the correct square.
  • Sight Word Puzzles: Cut out these sight word puzzles (16 editable and 16 pre-filled) and have students build the words. They can practice writing them after they build the puzzles for extra practice.
  • What Comes Next? This sequencing game provides six different sequencing scenarios. Students will put the correct picture that completes the sequence.
  • Build a Letter: In this activity, students will use pom poms to build the letter. This is a great fine motor activity.

In this Onset and Rime Clip Card Activities set, students will use a clothespin to clip the correct letter for the onset (beginning sound) or the rime (the rest of the word after the beginning sound). I would suggest printing on cardstock and laminating for longevity. If you do not want to print in color, select grayscale on your printer selections.

What is Onset and Rime?

  • The onset is the initial phonological unit of any word(beginning sound). Ex. /d/ in dog.
  • The rime is the rest of the word, usually a vowel and final consonants, Ex. /og/ in dog.
