Digital activities for kindergarten are a great way to start building students’ computer skills, while also addressing important academic skills. You can use them in centers or as at home learning activities. Even better, students can access many digital learning activities on a variety of devices, which is great if you only have 1-2 types of technology available within your classroom.

When choosing activities, it is important to keep in mind what type of devices you want students to be able to use. For that reason, there are two platforms that are really useful when implementing kindergarten digital activities—Seesaw and Boom Learning. Both platforms have apps and websites that students can access on computers, phones, and tablets, and both support activities that cover a wide array of kindergarten skills!

Boom Learning

Boom Cards, hosted at Boom Learning provide a great resource for digital activities for kindergarten. Students can get immediate feedback, and each activity is very interactive. For example, if you wanted to address a skill like CVC words with Boom Cards, students could look at a picture that represents a CVC word and use letters on the card to build the word. Then, they can click a button on the screen to check their work. If they are correct, the program rewards them with a little “ding” and green circles to show them which parts they were successful with! Boom Cards work in a similar way with other skills like sight words. Students can build the words, and then check their answers.

https://kreativeinlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/1-Crystal-Kreative-in-Life-spelling-cvc-words.mp4

Your students can also practice different kindergarten math skills on Boom Learning. If you want students to practice a skill like addition, students can do that using Boom Cards, as well. If your students are at the stage where they are still using pictures to help them solve math problems, you can choose “decks” of cards where pictures are provided, and they can choose the correct answer from number choices on the card. For more advanced students, the card displays the problem only, and students use their keyboards to type in the answer! With Boom Learning, the options of kindergarten skills that you can address are limitless!

https://kreativeinlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/1-Crystal-Kreative-in-Life-counting.mp4

Seesaw

Seesaw is another great platform to use when you want to introduce your students to digital activities for kindergarten. Unlike Boom Learning, this platform does not give immediate feedback. However, it is just as interactive for students, and you can use it to address just as many skills! For example, if you want your students to work on sight words, you can assign an activity like my Seesaw Build a Sight Word set. On each slide of the activity, there are different pictures, and students can even click a speaker on the slide in order to hear the word. Then, they choose the drawing tool from the tools section on Seesaw and build the sight word shown on the screen!

https://kreativeinlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/seesawbuiltsight-square.mp4

There are other tools students can use when completing digital learning activities on this platform, as well. There is a tool to click and drag, an option to create a text box if needed, and a tool students can use to easily add a picture or voice recording. When students have completed the tasks on each slide, they simply submit their work, and it is available to you as the teacher to check!

Including digital activities in your classroom is so important to start building your students’ computer skills. Not only that, but these types of activities are so handy any time your district has to go into distance learning mode, and you have to rely on different forms of instruction. Using platforms like Boom Learning and Seesaw are great because they are interactive, can be used to address a variety of skills, and are fun for students!

Online learning platforms took the place of in-person educational institutions during the pandemic. Even though we’re back to in-person group settings, you can still use these virtual learning platforms! For example, you can use these platforms for educational games, educational resources, and interactive lesson plans. Although online classes aren’t the norm anymore, these online programs provide educational opportunities to students in a fun way. The online platform I’m currently obsessed with is called Seesaw.

Before I get into the tips for using online learning platforms like Seesaw, I wanted to talk about it a little bit. If you aren’t familiar with the platform, Seesaw is an online tool where teachers can assign, create, and view digital assignments. There are mobile and desktop versions so that students can use them regardless of their available devices. It also allows for connecting with families for communication. Students can even use Seesaw to take pictures of their work to create a portfolio.

Seesaw is one of the best online learning tools, especially when remote learning experiences were the only teaching method during the pandemic. In addition, this platform is a great way to incorporate interactive media into your classroom routine, even when teaching in person. So, keep reading to discover how you can teach your students online learning platforms such as Seesaw and use them to your advantage.

Tip #1: Have Explicit Lessons on Using Online Learning Platforms

Like anything in kindergarten, you need to show students how to use Seesaw before they use it themselves. Therefore, I recommend sharing your screen with students online or in-person while completing an activity. For example, you can show students how to use certain tools on the platform. Kindergarten students will mostly use tools like the “select and move” tool and the “entering a text box” tool. Then, make sure students have the right activities with ample time to practice using those tools. You want to practice these activities with them before expecting them to complete an assignment alone.

Here is an excellent example of phonics lessons that kids can do at their own pace. You or a parent can check their work after they’re finished.

https://kreativeinlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/SS-ABC-Product_0.mp4

Tip #2: Try to Incorporate Moveable Pieces

As mentioned before, Seesaw has a cool feature where students can select moveable pieces and move them to where they belong. To me, this seems like the simplest way for kindergarten students to complete digital assignments, as most are probably somewhat familiar with drag-and-drop games and activities. An example of this would be a math activity where students solve addition problems. It would be helpful to simply drag and drop the answers to the problem rather than create a text box and then paste it into it. Think of it like a digital, cut-and-paste activity. Of course, this is not to say that you shouldn’t do any other type of activity. Still, students would have an easier time completing this type of digital assignment, especially if they were new to using Seesaw.

Tip #3: Utilize the Activity Library

Creating educational materials through Seesaw for your students is a great way to use interactive content. After all, you know what course materials your students need to be working on. However, it can become time-consuming and stressful to create original content for your students constantly. The best thing about Seesaw is that it has an “Activity Library,” where you can search through interactive games and online lessons that have already been created by and for teachers like you. Suppose you aren’t finding exactly what you need in Seesaw’s library of activities. In that case, you can also search Teachers Pay Teachers, where many education experts have free and paid resources that they have added to Seesaw. Utilizing the activity library can take a lot of stress off your plate while still providing your students with high-quality educational content.

Tip #4: Connect Families with Online Learning Platforms

My final tip for using Seesaw in kindergarten is to connect with families. Parents love being able to see their child’s progress and what they’ve been working on. On the other hand, students love sharing their portfolios with their parents. It is a great way to get parents more involved in what their students are working on in school and a great way to help students take pride in their work. Overall, it can be an excellent tool for communicating with students’ families.

Final Thoughts on Online Learning Programs

Seesaw and other online learning programs have become more important than ever over the past year. Despite teaching in person instead of a virtual classroom, the age of learning is becoming more technological. Since the pandemic, online education has become the ideal choice for kids of all ages because it offers so much flexibility. Even in the classroom, using online activities and lessons allows you to use what another certified teacher already created.

Using new technologies for educational content can be overwhelming, but I hope these tips for using Seesaw in Kindergarten will be helpful in your classroom!

The children are coming! The children are coming! As a writer and curriculum designer, it’s super important to me that I create resources that will make your life easier. I came up with a list of Must-Have Editable Resources for Back to School and hit the ground running.

Now, you must know that creating editable resources is no easy task. I first have to create the entire set, then save individual pages, then reinsert them into a new document individually into new slides, and then add text boxes. So, when sellers can’t make editable resources, it’s not because they don’t love you. They do! They really, really do. It’s just that when you make something editable, you can guarantee that it will at least double the amount of hours it will take the creator.

This post is filled with a gazillion hours of love, creating resources that will hopefully give you back hours! YOU, my friend, are important, and we are about to step up your A Game with less time and stress! Look. Out. World.

NAMES

Life just got easier with these EDITABLE Names Units!

I don’t know about you, but it takes me For-Ev-Er to create name tracing pages for my students every year. I created this EDITABLE Name Practice Unit that includes four printable options. All you have to do is type in your class list ONCE and it generates ALL of the pages automatically for you! There are two purchase options: standard print and d’nealian.

The first page of the document is a class list that holds up to 30 names. Once you type in your class list, the four pages for each student are automatically generated. If you only have 22 students, it will only generate pages for 22 names. If you have over 30 students (bless you), you can save the download as two different files to create two lists. Once you have everything downloaded, it will literally take you less than five minutes to make ALL of these personalized printables.

Printable Options:

Page 1: Trace your name.

Page 2: Trace your name with a pencil, pen, marker, and crayon. There are visuals so students know which to use.

Page 3. Rainbow write your name. This is where student write their name with three different crayons or markers to create a rainbow effect. So fun and a student favorite!

Page 4: Write your name.

You’ve probably landed here because you are looking for resources to support your young learner during this challenging time. Today we are sharing with you our favorite educational websites. We are all familiar with the learning bridge that happens during the summer months when young children are out of school and less stimulation occurs. How can we avoid that during the coming weeks and months as we navigate school closures and e-learning?

I wanted to share, from my perspective as an early childhood educator, some of my favorite educational websites to help you as you begin to supplement and strategize in an effort to support your child’s education. I know a lot of us are trying to avoid too much screen time, but these apps and online programs are perfect for young learners to enjoy while mom or dad work from home, make dinner, or eat chocolate in the pantry. No judgement here! And, I’ve included a little video sneak peek from each site so you can somewhat know what to expect. These sites are definitely teacher approved and sites I used in the classroom with my students for many years.

Educational Websites for Kids

GoNoodle— Offering interactive wellness activities for young families, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to try out of some of their games for young children. In fact, the whole family can get involved and enjoy these! My kids particularly love the Poppin’ Bubbles activity, be sure to let your kids try that one! Get your kids moving with these fun and engaging songs. Exercise is important and this free website will get everyone moving and shaking!

Cosmic Kids Yoga Videos—I know we are all looking for additional ways to help our kids use their never ending energy in a healthy way (because my nerves can only take so much, right?) so it was a no brainer to share one of my favorite Youtube channels for kids. In fact, I’ve linked directly to their free lesson plans! I love how, through yoga, she’s able to bring favorite stories to life from Pokemon to Frozen. There’s something for each child.

Storyline—This one is another one that is so fun for the entire family. Celebrities read children’s book for free. This is a go to site when you are ready for a little quiet time or before a nap. Snuggle up and listen to a good book that is developmentally appropriate for your young learner. Oprah, Mark Dupless, and Chrissy Metz recently took care of after school story in my home! They’ve even won some incredible awards for the work their foundation is doing in the children’s literacy community! Listen to the book Arnie the Doughnut right now.

Chess Kid —is the perfect online game if you have little gamers on your hands. I love that Chess can translate right over to their every day even if they study it and learn it online.

Starfall—This is such an amazing website that covers early literacy, math, holidays and seasons. There are so many songs and activities that are colorful and engaging. Listen to a nursery rhyme, play a movement song or practice counting. This site has it all for early childhood.

My friend over at This Messy Season, recently shared this resource on her Facebook page. Here is a list from Travel & Leisure Magazine with museums you can visit virtually! How cool is that? Even though this is a stressful time, we can easily provide cultural experiences for our kids without leaving home.

When it comes to setting boundaries for your child’s screen time, it can be anything but easy. It’s hard to resist the convenience of letting your children watch TV so that you can finish your housework. Let’s face it, they won’t complain, either. Children today typically average about 7 hours of electronic use in a single day, which for my kids is just too much! However, I also have a hard time finding a happy medium between too much screen time and the right amount. This is why I started setting screen time boundaries for my kids. Here is how you can learn to do the same for yours.

Set a Time Limit

Decide ahead of time how much screen time you want your children to have each day, and keep track of it on a paper or a printable. Start by slowly scaling back the amount of TV time, and in a couple of weeks, you’ll find that sweet spot. Just make sure that when the time is up, the screens go off!

Turn Off the Screens If No One is Watching Them

How many of you leave the TV running as background noise? I’m guilty of it myself! One of the most effective ways to limit screen time is by turning off the TV when it’s not being actively watched. Kids tend to get distracted easily, so they may stop watching TV in favor of playing with something instead. Go ahead and turn off the TV, and let them focus their attention on whatever toy they’re playing with.

Set Up a Screen Time Schedule

Perhaps your children have a favorite show they like to watch, or you enjoy watching a certain show as a family each night. A great way to limit your screen time throughout the day is by allowing your kids to only watch during certain times. For example, I let them watch one show while I’m making breakfast and dinner, so I’m not distracted while cooking.

Have Your Kids Earn Their TV Time

Some children today act like they are entitled to a certain amount of TV time. Instead of allowing them to have a set amount of time, make them earn it! In our home, kids earn a certain amount of TV time depending on how many chores they complete. If nothing is done, no TV that day!

Choose Quality Shows Over Mindless TV

If you decide to allow your kids TV time, it doesn’t mean they have to watch useless shows all day. You are the one who is in control of what your children watch and what they are exposed to. Depending on what your child is studying and their age, you can choose educational television or limit shows. If your children have summer reading projects this year, try to encourage them by allowing them to watch the movie when they’ve finished the book.

Our family is far from perfect, and some days our kids watch entirely too much TV. However, setting boundaries for your children’s screen time will help them do more during the day and keep them from lounging in front of the TV all day.

Happy parenting!

It is not hard to see that MUSIC has the incredible power to support the development of a child. Aside from being so much FUN, music grows a child’s language and increases cognitive, emotional, social, and creative development. Music education does not have to be provided in a music class though. Early childhood teachers and parents can provide meaningful experiences with singing and movement. As a parent (and before studying child development), I had no idea how important music was to helping to produce unique connections in the brain. Music prepares the brain to work from both hemispheres. Music is the tool that leads to higher level thinking. Pretty cool huh?!

I want to share a few of my musical favs for in and out of the classroom.

Every day, my class participates in using brain breaks through a free website called gonoodle.com. It is Ah-mazing and my student LOVE it. It combines music and movement. Here is a youtube example of a gonoodle video. Seriously, every teacher and parent should sign up for their FREE account. It’s too much fun not to miss! There is fast music and calming music. I’m not going to lie, sometimes you may walk in my classroom and we may be doing a brain break yoga. Don’t all children need to learn to belly breath too? Ha!

Let’s talk sight words. So stinkin’ important for young learners! My class big puffy heart loves Heidi Songs. We add two new songs a week and my kids are rocking and rolling with their sight words. I’m telling you, music and movement are the key here. Sensory integration speaks to all learners. Here is a great video showcases all that Heidi Songs has to offer.

For the love of all things FUN! I first met Shawn Brown at Frog Street SPLASH’s summer conference four summers ago. As a teacher, I loved every session he gave and could not wait to share his music with my students. Really, The Super Fun Show should go down in your classroom every day!

I am so honored to call Debbie Clement one of my friends! She is the author and creator of rainbowswithinreach.com. Her music is wonderful. She has created these amazing books and at the back of each book is a CD with the song for that book. These books stay in my classroom library year round. My school had the privilege of welcoming Debbie for an author’s visit and it was so much fun. She is so incredibly talented and children love her. Here is an example of on of my favorite songs for young learners. If you ever have the opportunity to bring an author/song writer to your school, I promise you would not regret a moment with Debbie Clement!

Another teacher/parent favorite of mine is Dr. Jean. If you haven’t heard her famous name then climb out from under that rock my friend. Dr. Jean is a seasoned and timeless educator that brings engaging fun and total silliness to our classroom every week. My kids beg to sign the Rules of the Classroom every day. Seriously. Every. Day. Ha! Hey, when kids want to sing about following the rules, you know something is right in the world.

The last musical genius I want to share with you is the Learning Station. I first found them on youtube and it was love at first note. I now own all of their CD’s and my kids request their songs by name. Don Monopoli is a very talented music creator and speaker. If you ever have a chance to see him at a conferences, do it!

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who your musical fav is or what songs you listen to. The most important thing is that you are making it a part of your everyday life. As an educator and as a parent, we need to give our kids opportunities to grow in every way possible. Music gets the whole child in the process of learning. What does this really mean? Music is IMPORTANT. In order for our kids to be well balanced learners, we should consider all of their needs. Lucky for us, MUSIC foots to
bill for so many of them.
