Fall Early Finisher Tubs

When you’re teaching a group of energetic kindergarteners, it’s essential to have activities ready for those who finish early. My November Early Finishers Tub is perfect for keeping young learners productive after they’ve completed their work. Why Teach the Five Senses in Kindergarten?

Teaching the five senses helps children develop observation skills, assists with language development, and encourages cognitive thinking. By exploring the senses, children learn to be more aware of their environment and understand how their bodies work. This knowledge lays the groundwork for scientific inquiry, as it encourages curiosity and exploration—skills that are vital for future learning.

Introduction to the Five Senses

Start your unit with a basic introduction to the five senses. Explain that our senses help us understand and learn about the world. You can use a fun song or rhyme to introduce each sense, making it easier for children to remember. Teach a catchy song that names each sense and the body part associated with it (e.g., “Eyes help us see, ears help us hear…”). Songs are a great way to reinforce memory through repetition and rhythm.

You can also set up five stations in your classroom, each dedicated to a different sense. Include posters or visual aids at each station that show the sense and the corresponding body part. Use these stations to introduce the topic and allow children to rotate through them.

Sense of Sight

The sense of sight is an excellent place to start, as it’s a sense children use extensively in their everyday activities. Focus on how our eyes help us see colors, shapes, sizes, and movements. Go on a color hunt around the classroom or playground. Ask students to find objects of a specific color and bring them back to a designated area. This activity enhances observation skills and color recognition. Or, play a game of “I Spy” using different colors, shapes, or objects around the classroom. This classic game encourages children to use descriptive language and strengthens their attention to detail.

Consider introducing simple optical illusions and ask children what they see. This can spark conversations about how sometimes our eyes can play tricks on us, highlighting the complexity of the sense of sight.

Sense of Hearing

Next, explore the sense of hearing by helping children understand how their ears work and the importance of listening. Take the class on a “sound walk” around the school or outside. Ask students to listen carefully and identify different sounds, such as birds chirping, cars passing, or leaves rustling. Discuss what they heard and how each sound made them feel.

You might play a “mystery sounds” game where children close their eyes and listen to various sounds (e.g., clapping, a bell ringing, water pouring). Have them guess what each sound is and discuss how we use our sense of hearing to identify sounds. You can also provide a variety of simple musical instruments and let children explore the different sounds they make. Discuss high and low sounds, loud and soft sounds, and create a class band to play a simple rhythm together.

Sense of Touch

Students can explore their sense of touch through activities that focus on texture, temperature, and pressure. Set up a texture table with a variety of materials like sandpaper, cotton balls, feathers, and smooth stones. Encourage children to touch each item and describe how it feels. Use descriptive words like rough, smooth, soft, and bumpy.

Children love learning through games! Play a fun guessing game by creating “feely bags.” Place different objects with distinct textures inside bags and have students reach in without looking and describe what they feel. 

Teach an important safety lesson of not touching things that are too hot by using warm and cold water bowls to help children understand temperature differences. Have them dip their hands in each bowl and describe how each feels.

Sense of Taste

Exploring the sense of taste is always a favorite with young learners! This activity can teach children about different flavors and how taste buds work. Prepare a taste-testing activity with foods representing the four basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. For example, use sugar (sweet), saltine crackers (salty), lemon slices (sour), and unsweetened cocoa powder (bitter). Guide students through tasting each item and discussing their reactions.

Make a game of using different flavored foods or drinks and have children match the flavor to a corresponding picture or description. This can be a fun way to build vocabulary and understanding of different tastes.

Use this time to combine the lesson with a healthy snack-making activity. Discuss how different flavors can complement each other and create a simple recipe that incorporates multiple tastes, like a fruit salad or veggie platter.

Sense of Smell

The sense of smell can be a fascinating topic for kindergarten students, as it is closely linked to taste and memory. Create smell jars with various scents, such as vanilla, cinnamon, mint, and lemon. Ask children to close their eyes, take a sniff, and guess what each smell is. Discuss how different scents can remind us of different things, like food, places, or experiences.

I’m a huge fan of incorporating art with any lesson. Use scented markers or scratch-and-sniff stickers for a fun art project. Children can draw pictures and then “smell” their artwork, combining creativity with sensory exploration.

You can also show children how there are different smells in nature. Bring in a variety of flowers and have children smell each one. Discuss how flowers have different scents and why some plants have strong smells. This can also be tied into a science lesson about pollination and how plants attract insects.

Integrating the Senses

To conclude your five senses unit, create an activity that integrates all five senses. This will help reinforce what students have learned and show how our senses work together to help us experience the world. You can organize a scavenger hunt that requires children to use all their senses. For example, find something that makes a noise (hearing), something that is red (sight), something soft (touch), something sweet (taste), and something fragrant (smell).

Sensory bins are an important part of the kindergarten classroom. Create sensory bins filled with items that engage multiple senses. For example, a bin filled with dried beans (touch and sound), scented rice (smell), or themed items related to a particular season or holiday.

You can also turn your story time into a sensory activity. Read a storybook that uses descriptive language about the five senses and provide sensory props to accompany the story. For example, if the book talks about a forest, bring in pine needles to smell, rough bark to touch, and sounds of birds chirping to listen to.

In conclusion, teaching the five senses in kindergarten is not only fun but also foundational for young learners. These activities encourage observation, develop critical thinking, and assist with language development. By incorporating a variety of hands-on activities and engaging experiences, you can create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that helps children better understand how they explore and interact with the world around them.

Choose the Correct Scissors

The first step in teaching scissor skills is to choose scissors specifically made for young children. These typically have rounded blades, which makes the tips safer for children. Avoid selecting conventional sharp blades since they may pose a risk of injury to small hands. 

Demonstrate Safe Use

Once you have the proper scissors, demonstrate safe use. Explain how to hold the scissors, while staying clear of the blades. Place a piece of paper on their desk, and show them on how to position the scissors for cutting. 

Provide Cutting Tasks

In the early stages of teaching scissor skills, use small task cards with simple designs. Cards with curved, straight, and zig-zag lines are easier and less overwhelming for kindergarteners.

Make it Fun

Learning a new skill is easier when it’s fun! As students progress with their scissor skills, you can use worksheets with fun themes and more complex lines for them to trace and then cut. The more hands-on practice, the better! 

Use Multi-Sensory Learning Techniques

The most effective way to teach scissor skills is through multi-sensory experiences. Along with cutting, you can encourage them to work on other fine motor skills with activities that encourage coloring, tracing, and pasting. These are also valuable skills as kindergarteners begin reading and writing.

In conclusion, when you successfully teach scissor skills, you enable children to confidently work on projects, such as arts and crafts. Once you introduce scissors to young learners and teach them the appropriate way to use them, providing plenty of practice is crucial. Students use the same fine motor skills as they continue to move on to more complex skills, such as writing, in their educational years.

Writing skills like pencil grasp and letter formation begin with the development of fine motor skills. Hand and finger strength, along with the ability to hold a writing tool, are just some of the factors that determine a child’s writing success. By starting early with fine motor activities, children develop stronger muscles. This gives them the ability to control their movements more efficiently. As a result, this leads to better writing down the line.

Concentration and Focus

Another reason to support the importance of fine motor activities in kindergarten is that they require a child to concentrate and focus on small movements. Activities such as tracing or dot-painting techniques are highly stimulating to children. As they explore these new elements, children learn self-discipline and perseverance while developing their fine motor muscles.

Cognitive Growth

Fine motor activities can support children in learning new and complex skills. For instance, as children engage in using assorted tools to complete activities, they are nurturing their hand-eye coordination. Therefore, manipulating objects allows them to engage in spatial reasoning and promotes problem-solving.

Vocabulary Building

Using scissors and other tools exposes children to new vocabulary. Children learn how to describe different lines and the proper names for shapes. As a result, these activities sharpen students’ vocabulary.

• Blue Rocks (gravel)

Directions

• Get a plastic tub and add blue rocks (gravel) to to it. Leave a bit of space for play sand.
• Add play sand to the remaining space in the tub.
• Place seashells and mini plastic sea plants in the play sand.
• Add mini plastic ocean animals to the blue rocks.

It’s time to play! Invite your little ones to explore the “ocean” and the “beach.” For more fun, add some water to the rocks! The sand will get wet and they can make tiny little castles. This ocean sensory tub will lead to hours of fun.

In the early childhood classroom (and even sooner), it’s important to provide a variety of experiences to strengthen a child’s tripod grasp before putting a writing utensil in their hands. Before I knew better, I would absolutely have my students cutting out Chester (from The Kissing Hand) puppets and writing their name the first day of school. I learned through research and instruction how important it is to allow students to strengthen their fine motor skills before we ask them to do such tasks. When we know better, we do better. There is a progression to everything we teach, so fine motor-based activities (including handwriting and cutting) should be no different. They are truly essential for a child’s development. Here are several of my favorite fine motor activities that you can teach throughout the school year.

Beads

Building names with pipe cleaners and beads. The process of putting beads onto a string or pipe cleaner is a great way for young children and their hand-eye coordination.

Wind Up Toys 

Kids don’t play with wind up toys much anymore, but they are really good for fine motor because you use your tripod fingers to wind the toy. 

Small Tweezers

Use plastic tweezers to pick up small objects, such as mini erasers. The use of small muscles will play an important role in everyday activities. Building little muscles at a young age can be super useful for important tasks in the classroom too. For example, this will do wonders for developing their pencil grip. These simple activities will make for great fine motor practice.

Large Tweezers

Use tongs to pick up various objects and put them in an ice cube tray. This is a fun way to help build the pincer grasp and help build their small hand muscles. This is another great opportunity to develop the pincer grip.

Spooning

Spoon beads from one container to another. This might seem like a simple activity but is a great opportunity for sensory play. They are not only hands on, moving small items to and from, but they are also seeing and listening as they move. This can also help with visual perception when they are using small movements to transfer. Building strong eye-hand coordination is incredibly useful.

Mini Hole Punch

This was always a class favorite. My kids loved this activity! Just add some plain colored paper and a few hole punches, and let them punch away. 

Tongs

I bought these small ice containers from IKEA. Add a few small tongs and large pom poms, and you’ve got the perfect fine motor activity!

I realize that you won’t find fine motor activities listed in your learning objectives, but strengthening them is so very important. You can also easily add an academic spin to any of these centers. If you choose to do just these center activities, you are still teaching children to share, to take turns, to get out and restore work, cooperative learning, using a center chart, and of course, there is the most important concept of strengthening their tripod grasp, so they can be better writers in the future. 

If you are looking to build your fine motor library, my team and I came up with a good system. We were a team of four and for two years, we each made two activities for the entire team. It was much more cost effective that way. I was able to get 16 activities for under $20. You will also be surprised what you already own that you can use. 

Starting Early

If you have young kids at home, I would encourage you to start now with fine motor activities. My son Bennett is sixteen months old, and we are already doing these activities at home. He loves them, and I know that even though I usually need to clean up a big mess when we are done, he is learning and growing, and that is what is important. The best part, I know he’s also having so much fun too. So, I don’t think it’s ever really too early when looking to build these life skills.

When students first come to us in Kindergarten, one of the very first things we have to teach them is how to write and recognize their own names. This basic skill helps students know where to sit, where to hang backpacks, and which things in the classroom belong to them. But, writing their names is just as important! Every paper they complete from here on out will need their name written clearly at the top so that they can take ownership of their work and the teacher knows who the work belongs to!

As a Kindergarten teacher, I always begin with a variety of teaching tools to teach names at the beginning of the year. After all, repetition will be the best way to help students master recognizing and writing their names, setting them up for success for the rest of the year. Plus, the kids have so much fun learning about their names!

Building Names with Manipulatives

Perhaps the most fun way to teach students their names is with hands-on practice! A good use of the materials or manipulatives in your classroom is a name recognition activity. For example, your students can use craft supplies like popsicle sticks, stickers, or pom-poms to make the different letters of the alphabet. You can also recycle items like bottle lids to make moveable letter pieces that students can use to build their names. You can even use common classroom manipulatives like pattern blocks, snap cubes, and magnetic letters! The possibilities are endless! In addition, when students practice their names with hands-on activities, they also strengthen their fine motor skills. It’s a win-win!

Your youngest learners may not yet have the fine motor skills necessary to hold a pencil or crayon to practice writing their names. My Editable Name Set 3 allows you to create name activities for each student in your class. Students then use the assorted manipulatives to spell out their names.

Tracing and Writing Names

As I mentioned before, repeating is a great way to learn name and letter recognition. But, that doesn’t mean that it has to be a monotonous task. Instead, I like to give them a variety of different name writing activities within the same worksheet. Worksheets are an easy way to practice important skills while switching up the material. By providing a variety of different materials, your students are getting multiple exposures to their names simultaneously. Name writing practice doesn’t have to be boring!

For example, the whole class could begin with name recognition activities like coloring the letters of their name. Then, they could move on to tracing their names either with a pencil or with crayons. Finally, students could write their names in a small group or independently using the boxes provided as a final task. I especially like this way of practicing names because it helps students see their name’s shape. The boxes provided show when letters are ascending, descending, or contained within the middle and bottom lines. By giving students multiple exposures to their names, they will remember it. You can find these in my Names Set 2 Unit.

Name Writing Worksheets

Once your students begin writing, the next step is my Editable Names Practice worksheets. This set is one of TPT’s best-selling name products with almost 3,000 five-star ratings. It’s a great activity for students to practice fine motor control by tracing each letter of their name! Once you type in a student’s name, the pages are automatically generated for you. These fine motor activities give students lots of practice tracing and writing their names.

Creating Personalized Name Books

You can also have your students create an Editable Name Book. Once again, you simply enter your students’ names on the first page, and the page automatically generates a name book for each student. This book is full of name practice activities your little learners will LOVE. These personalized name books are a great idea for honing your students’ reading skills.

We know how important it is for students to recognize their names, even from the very first day of school. However, it is a necessary skill that not all young children are familiar with. Utilizing different ways to teach the name recognition learning process is crucial for foundational literacy skills. Fun ideas like rainbow writing and hands-on activities will help students master their names in no time!

Sensory Bin Set Up

First and foremost, you need to get your very own sensory bin or sensory tub. This can often look like plastic tubs but you’re certainly not limited to that option. You can get these at a variety of locations like Target, Wal-Mart, or the dollar store. You don’t need anything too fancy; a simple sensory bin will do. Then you need to get your sensory bin basics in order before your kiddos can start their sensory bin play!

Before you get ready to use sensory bins in your classroom, you need to have some sensory bin fillers on hand. Typically, I use a themed sensory bin and its theme to help me decide what kind of filler I am going to use. I find this is a fun way to get students engaged in a sensory activity. For instance, if I am creating an Easter sensory bin for my students, then I will use Easter grass (typically used in Easter baskets) as a filler. Using different textures like this is a simple way for kindergarten students to engage in sensory exploration.

If I want the base of the sensory bin to look like dirt, I might use a dark colored dry bean. You can even use other commonly found supplies like pom poms, shredded paper, or even uncooked rice to fill your sensory bin. The internet is full of other awesome sensory bin ideas. These are just a few! Of course, the best sensory bins are the ones you put time, care, and thought into. This is a great opportunity for you to have fun and get creative too!

Using Sensory Bins for Science

After finding an appropriate filler for your sensory bins, you might also want to use small toys or printed items to add to your bin. For example, if I am making a science sensory bin that focuses on a theme like insects, I could include tools like magnifying glasses and small insect replicas. Then, students could study the insects, notice the body parts of insects, and notice the similarities and differences of assorted insects. This is just one of the many benefits of sensory bins.

Similarly, if my class was already learning about flowers, I could include fake flowers in a sensory bin so that students could take a closer look at different flowers and their parts. You can also include small figurine farm animals and explore their body parts, what sounds they make, etc. A themed, plus scientific, sensory bin activity is super helpful to enhancing academic skills but also too much fun!

Sensory bins are a great way to help students observe things that they might not ordinarily get to observe in the classroom, making them a great tool for science!

Using Sensory Bins for Literacy

As mentioned before, you can also choose to print items to put in your sensory bins. This is one of my favorite ways to use sensory bins in literacy centers! You can print sight words for students to find within the sensory bin. After finding a word, students can record each word they have found on a recording sheet. 

In a similar way, students can find cvc pictures within a sensory bin, and then record the written word on a recording sheet. You can make activities like this even more fun by having the cvc picture overlaying a carrot, and then plant the “carrots” in a dark brown dried bean filler to be the dirt! You can even focus your bin on rhyming words, counting syllables, and more, depending on which printed activities you decide to use! Essentially, most literacy centers can be made a little more fun and hands-on by bringing sensory bins into the mix! 

Using Sensory Bins for Math

When printing items for sensory bins, it is also really simple to address math skills. Think about how fun it would be for students to be able to dig in a fun sensory material in an Easter-themed bin for pictures of baskets of eggs that they can count and record. Or for them to practice a skill like counting on after searching for the first number to use. Like literacy-based sensory bins, there are many math skills you can bring a little more excitement to by integrating them into a sensory bin.

Using Sensory Bins for Dramatic Play

Don’t have room for a dramatic play center in your classroom but want to give your students the dramatic play experience? No problem! You can still get many of the same benefits of dramatic play centers within a sensory bin. In an earlier example, I mentioned that students could observe toy bugs within a sensory bin. Add a few more things like notepads for students to take notes on the bugs and a simple classification chart then suddenly, it becomes an entomologist dramatic play center!

Students could also play restaurant with sensory bins. By using chopsticks, students could pick up different pieces of sushi out of a rice bin, which would be great for their fine motor skills! Like with full dramatic play centers, students will practice key vocabulary terms and skills that are associated with different occupations and places in a fun and playful way. Imaginative play like this will have your little learners having tons of fun without even realizing their learning! 

Using sensory bins in kindergarten might seem like pure and simple fun at first glance. Of course we know about the important sensory aspect they bring, but it is also important to consider how we can use them to enhance our students’ learning. We can do this by being intentional about the types of materials and printed activities we make a part of our sensory bins, so that students can continue practicing literacy, math, and science skills even when they feel like they are playing!
